Description
AMS1117 5V to 3.3V DC-DC Step-Down Power Supply Module 800mA
The AMS1117 5V to 3.3V Step-Down Module is a compact and widely used voltage regulator designed to provide a stable 3.3V output from a higher input voltage such as 5V. Based on the popular AMS1117-3.3 linear regulator IC, this module is ideal for powering low-voltage electronics like microcontrollers, sensors, and communication modules.
Unlike switching buck converters, the AMS1117 module is a linear voltage regulator, meaning it reduces voltage by dissipating excess energy as heat. This makes it simple, low-noise, and reliable—especially for sensitive analog and digital circuits—but less efficient at higher input voltages or currents.
The module typically supports an input voltage range from about 4.5V up to 12V (or higher depending on design), and provides a fixed 3.3V output with a maximum current of up to 800mA. However, in practical use, it is recommended to stay around 500mA or lower to avoid overheating, especially without a heat sink.
Its small size and 3-pin interface (VIN, GND, VOUT) make it extremely easy to integrate into breadboards and PCB designs. Many versions also include a power indicator LED and onboard capacitors for improved voltage stability.
This module is commonly used in Arduino, ESP8266, ESP32, STM32, and other 3.3V-based systems where a clean and stable power supply is required.
